A Favorite Advent Hymn – Pastor Amanda Warner

There are so many Advent hymns that I really love.  The songs of Advent can be as much of a joy as the songs of Christmas.  But since I’ve been asked to choose one, I would have to say that my favorite is Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah (Evangelical Lutheran Worship 240)Every year since we have been married Britton and I have sung that song as we have lighted our Advent wreath at home.  Now our kids sing it with us as well.  Every night during Advent we read an Advent devotion, they open their Advent calendars (usually containing chocolate), and we sing a verse of that hymn as we light the Advent wreath.  They look forward to this tradition as much as we do.  There are Advent hymns with more beautiful music, and Advent hymns that have more stirring words, but because our family has shared this hymn together for so long and because it brings us together and helps us focus on the great hope of our lives and the great hope of the church, the coming of Jesus, the King of Kings and Prince of Peace, I would say that it is my favorite Advent hymn.
